Black as a political colour — Guilly Koster

When talking about racism we use the words ‘black’ and ‘white’. Guilly Koster —a Dutch tv-maker and activist— makes a distinction between black as an ethnic colour and black as a political color.

While ethnic black, Guilly says, means that you are born black, you can choose the political color black, just like red (socialists), blue (liberals) or green (environmentalists). He defines the political color black as: “When you are not part of the white political establishment”. And the white establishment, according to Koster, is all the places where people are in the position of power to decide how the our society is seen or constructed.
