The folkloric figure of Black Pete is a racist stereotype; a prolongation of a long history of blackface. As the folktale goes, mid November St. Nicolas and his group of helpers, called 'Pieten' arrived in The Netherlands. They will return to Spain after December 5th. During this period, I will post daily on the subject matter of the 'racist character of Black Pete'. Each post will show, deny, neglect, protest, present, discuss or challenge an aspect of this racist character. Black Pete must go!
One of the first known and powerful protests broadcasted on National Television was this clip in 1987 Sesame Street.

Gerda Havertong: “Nee, Pino, het is helemaal niet leuk. Ik heet Gerda, ook als het Sinterklaasfeest is. Kijk… we begrijpen best dat Sinterklaas al zo lang komt en dat het best wel een vrolijk feest is. Maar voor heel veel zwarte mensen, grote mensen en kinderen is het helemaal geen feest. We kunnen bijna niet vrolijk zijn.”
Gerda: “En ik heb er genoeg van om voor pieterbaas uitgemaakt te worden. Ik ben het zat!”
Pino: “Ik wist echt niet dat je het zo erg vond, Gerda”
Gerda: “Dat begrijp ik wel Pino. Ik ben ook eigenlijk niet boos op jou.”
