In the run up to the Dutch municipal elections of March 2022, I found this on the streets of Rotterdam. Is this election poster sampling the flexed arm of Rosie the Riveter? Is it (cultural) appropriating a feminist icon? Or returning to the closer-to-the-original message of “inspiring women workers to join the war effort” and “to exhort already-hired women to work harder”. With the start of this post, these questions (and more) are out there, waiting to be explored and unraveled. More to come…
